River Hawks to Battle Division I Powerhouse UConn in Exhibition

Basketball Team Takes on UConn in 2008

The men’s basketball team will play perennial national-championship contender University of Connecticut in an exhibition game at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn., on Nov. 8 at 1 p.m.

This is the second year the two teams have met in the pre-season, thanks to a connection between River Hawks Head Coach Greg Herenda and UConn’s Head Coach Jim Calhoun and Associate Coach George Blaney. Herenda served as Blaney’s assistant coach for eight years when Blaney coached at Holy Cross and Seton Hall.

“Obviously we are very excited to play UConn for the second year in a row,” Herenda says.  “Playing on their campus and in front of their students at Gampel will just add to a great opportunity for our team, our program and our University.”

The River Hawks opened last season with an exhibition game against the UConn Huskies in front of a crowd of 11,113 at Hartford’s XL Center.

The game will be preceded by a UMass Lowell fan and alumni reception in the Student Center Ballroom, Room 331, at 11 a.m.  Tickets are $30, which includes food and cash bar at the reception and admission to the game. To purchase tickets by credit card, call Amy Lisavich, 978-934-3187 or e-mail Amy_Lisavich@uml.edu.

“I hope we will have our students and our alums follow us to Storrs,” Herenda says. “It will be a great day and I hope we will have a big contingent of River Hawk fans behind us.”
